The Lord is My Portion
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:26
In the Hebrew society, an inheritance or portion of land for a family was of great significance. The Promised land was given by God to His children, the people of Israel, and under the Mosaic Law the family’s portion of the land was to remain in the tribe forever. There was one exception, the tribe of Levi that were ordained as priest of God. Deuteronomy 10:9 state “Wherefore Levi hath no part nor inheritance with his brethren; the Lord is his inheritance, according as the Lord thy God promised him.” God promised that He would be their portion and provide for all their needs.
The Israelites would learn that God is the provider of all things and His promise given to their father Abraham would remain forever. “And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” Genesis 12:2-3.
As born-again believers we are also God’s beloved children by rebirth and adoption as heirs. We are recipients of the promise through Christ Jesus our Lord, the only begotten Son of God. Through His redeeming blood we have been blessed with an eternal inheritance. 1 Peter 1: 3-4 state “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,”
My friends, there is absolutely nothing as valuable as the promises of God, He is faithful that promised! We can say with all assurance as David proclaimed in Psalm 73:26 “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” The LORD is our portion no matter what comes or goes, He is the source of our joy, healing, comfort, and peace; He will provide for all that we need now and forever! Let us meditate on these comforting words today “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” Psalm 23:1
God blessing and favor be with you all!
