Wholly Other

“Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.” Isaiah 40:28

God created man with the intellect to acquire great knowledge and understanding. So much so that the human mind will tend to think it is self-sufficient and knows it all! Consider the Tower of Babel, the people sought to make themselves one and build a tower up to heaven. Perhaps they thought they would prevent the flood and preserve themselves…but God had already promised to never destroy the world by a flood again. God commanded that they disperse and replenish the earth; they decided to “stay together” that was in direct opposition to the will of God. Scripture gives us an account of what the results were, God confounded their speech and scattered them abroad anyway. “Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.” Genesis 11:9.

Man’s quest for all knowledge is a fearful and sad thing… God is omniscient and Creator of all. “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” Revelation 4:11. It is God’s prerogative to be universal monarch, Lord of all, and King of kings; any man that allows iniquity to set in his heart and seek to usurp the authority of God, woe unto this man…for the bible tells us in Hebrews 10:31 “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

God is “wholly other” in Christian theology this term describes the difference between God and everything else. God is completely different than all other things that exist and will not give his glory to another. So, what should we do to avoid falling into Satan’s evil trap of self- sufficiency and disobedience to God’s sovereign will?

First and foremost, we must humbly recognize and respect the omniscience of God. “Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.” Isaiah 40:28. We cannot even begin to imagine the thoughts of our Almighty God; they are not ours and exceed our finite existence. He is God!

Every living soul must recognize that He is the only Potentate; He rules and controls all things in Heaven and in earth; this means that He along orchestrates our coming in and going out today and forevermore. All that we already know or will ever need to know comes from God; His word admonishes those of us, in James 1:5 state “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

God is our Heavenly Father who provides, protects, and leads us along this journey called life; He is due our reverence and praise; Jesus Himself befittingly gives God the praise and honor in His model prayer:

“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”

Therefore, above all things, let us never forget that He is wholly other, and certainly not our back fence body…may we faithfully do according to the words found in 1 Peter 5:6 “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:” Obedience and trust brings the blessings of peace, love, protection and favor from God now and forever. “But now, O Lord, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand” Isaiah 69:4. He has only the very best in store for those who trust and acknowledge Him as Lord of all.

God’s blessings of love and peace be with us all.
