Devotion to the Word

“But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.” 1 Peter 1:25.

In my home as a child there were a few things that my parents instilled in us: the love of God, His word, and getting an education. My sister Louise always says, “these are the staples of life that we grew up on.” I concur with her because our parents by the grace of God, lived it, preached it, and demanded it from us all.

Now, I must be very clear, even as an educator that we do not have to be educated with degrees to live a successful life; but we can not live a successful life without the wisdom, knowledge and understanding that comes from the word of God.

The Lord spoke these words unto his servant Joshua “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” Joshua 1:8.

Immersing ourselves in the word of God is more about faith and obedience. “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6. This is a foundational truth…we must by faith believe in God. And…where does faith come from? Romans 10:17 gives us the answer “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Bingo! My friends, we must be wrapped up, tied up, and tangled all up in the Word of God!

Three things to remember about the word of God:

  1. It is permanent: It stands forever; all creation speaks and testifies of God’s glory. “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.” Psalm 119:89
  2. It is powerful: It saves, succours, guides, comforts, and empowers us, only to name a few benefits; God promises that it will never go out void. “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11
  3. It is perfect: The best things in this world are imperfect; only with God and His Word is there perfection. “I have seen an end of all perfection: but thy commandment is exceeding broad.” Psalm 119:96.

I admonish you to remain devoted to the word of God in and through all things; it is the bread of life to our hungry souls! “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 1 Peter 2:2-3.

God blessings of joy and grace to all.
