An Anchor of the Soul
“Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;” Hebrews 6:19.
Anchor (agkura, Latin = ancora, an anchor) is a heavy weight of stone or metal attached to a rope or chain and dropped overboard to keep a ship from moving with the current. Ancient anchors were much like the modern ones with iron hooks to grapple the rocks and so hold on to prevent shipwreck. A vessel that is not securely anchored does not have much hope of riding out a violent storm. Figuratively, as used in Hebrews it speaks of that which provides security, support, stay, safeguard (as hope). The anchor refers to the hope generated by faith in the gospel which enables the believer to stand firm in face of temptations, calamities, and storms. – Wuest Greek Commentary
God’s amazing grace through Jesus Christ our Lord provides for us the “anchor” to which our very souls grips and clings when we face turmoil and uncertainty in life. Our security is safe in His sovereignty; it is a sure hope. 1 Peter 1:21 state “Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.”
And yes, it appears as though we may be totally engulfed and shipwrecked with insurmountable circumstances… but the word of God reminds us that we are blessed by the abundant mercies of God, every born-again believer has a living hope and are kept safe and secure by His power! “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” 1 Peter 1: 3-5.
My friends, just as the anchor that is under the sea and invisible to the eye from the shore… but yet it holds those giant ships from being tossed off course…God’s Word is the firm and secure anchor of our souls, and HE- Jesus- keeps us steadfast and unmovable! “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1.
I do not know about you today… my soul is anchored in the Lord, and I pray that your soul has been anchored in His loving care as well… let us remember that God is not through with us yet… these trials and tribulations are only for a season… and every single one is all for the praise, honor and glory of God! “Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:” 1 Peter 1:6-7.
Let us remain steadfast in the hope that He alone will never leave us, nor forsake us, and He will keep us safe in His everlasting arms!
Blessings and peace for a wonderful day in the safety of our Lord!
