A Multitude of God’s Tender Mercies
“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.” Psalm 51:1.
Sin is anything that is contrary to the law or will of God; man out of disobedience to the will of God, has been sinning since the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. We were all born into this sin nature that we have; and if we deny it, we are walking in darkness without the light of God’s truth dwelling within. “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” 1 John 1:8.
“Men are greatly terrified at the multitude of their sins, but here is a comfort – our God hath multitude of mercies. If our sins be in number as the hairs of our head, God’s mercies are as the stars of heaven.” (Symson, cited in Spurgeon). God extends His amazing grace and tender mercies towards all those who will come to His mercy seat for forgiveness. “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Isaiah 1:18.
It takes a truly repentant and humble heart to go before God and agree when we have sinned-or stepped outside of His will. In the book of II Samuel, we find the account of King David having committed adultery with Bathsheba, he then arranged for her husband Uriah to be killed in the heat of a battle, so that he could take her as a royal wife; after an eye-opening conversation with the prophet Nathan, we see a broken-hearted man seeking spiritual restoration and the outpouring of God’s tender mercies. “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.” Psalm 51:1.
What sin or sins are you grappling with today-we all have something that we need to confess and bring to the foot of the cross, looking for God’s mercy and grace in a time of need; the word of God reminds us that “great is thy faithfulness” He is a promise keeping God- and He will forgive the one who humbles desires a clean heart to follow Him! 1 John 1:9 state “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
My friends let us rest in the comfort and peace of knowing that the multitude of God’s tender mercies are new every morning! “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness Lamentations 3:22-23.
