True Humility

“Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5.

Man, naturally seeks self-gratification; we come into this world with a selfish nature. Infants cry because they have needs to be met, it does not matter if it is 3a.m or 4p.m the call for help is the same. Certainly, at first it is a true need, infants are helpless and must be cared for by competent and loving adults.

However, as they grow older, they learn by our response to their cries that they can get exactly what they want, when they want it. So, it continues until they grow older, and we teach them how to wait and consider others. “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” 1 John 2:16.

Humility is a modest or low view of one’s own importance; the characteristic of one who exhibits humbleness: the self-constraint to step back and consider the needs of others, and recognizing that all that we have, do, and have accomplished is by the graciousness of Almighty God.  1 Peter 5:6 states, “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:”

Self-introspection is a vital step in humility…am I willing to look at how my walk impact others…am I willing to ask God to change in me, what is not aligned with His will?  True humility is staying teachable, regardless of how much you already know.” Anonymous.

When we become self-serving, praise seekers; and closed minded; unfortunately, that’s when pride has stepped in, and the ego takes over. The bible teaches us in Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”

“At every stage of our Christian development and in every sphere of our Christian discipleship, pride is our greatest enemy and humility is our greatest friend.” -John Stott. We must constantly check ourselves; Satan is subtle and seeking to nourish our egos and separate us from God at all costs.

My friends, let us humble ourselves by reverencing God, truly praying to have a teachable spirit, being filled with the Holy Ghost and ready to give respect and consideration to others at all times. ”Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble” 1 Peter 5:5.
