What’s in a Name?

Our names identify us, we are known, referred to, or addressed by them; they can be personal an establish an intimate or not so intimate relationship with others. But, my friends, there is only one name that all men shall confess is Lord of all-Jesus Christ! for it is written “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:10-11.

In the account of Jesus’ crucifixion found in Luke chapter twenty-three, they wrote a subscription in mockery to hang over His cross; verse thirty-eight state “And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, This Is The King Of The Jews.” And during the sixth hour until the ninth hour the scripture tells us that the sun was darkened, and there was darkness over all the earth!

What a phenomenal occurrence not only on Calvary’s hill that day, but for all the world to see and recognize, God’s only begotten Son, the Savior of the world! Scripture validates that when Jesus gave up the ghost, one centurion could only glorify God! “Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.” Luke 23:47. Jesus is not only King of the Jews, but King of Kings and Lord of all!

And let us take a look at the apostle Peter, who being filled with the Holy Ghost was not careful to answer the high priest, about in whose name he and John had healed a lame man, he boldly proclaimed “Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.” Acts 4:10.

My friends, there is power in the name of Jesus “For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” Romans 14:11. And just flip over a few more pages…in the book of Revelation chapter nineteen, when He returns, on His vesture and thigh a name shall be written: “And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords.” Hallelujah!

Jesus is our Almighty deliverer, and Saviour!  God’s amazing grace through Him gives us hope, mercy, healing, and comfort; His name is above all names, He alone is the light of the world and when we call on His name, He will answer, giving us rest for our weary soul! Isaiah 9:6b state “and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

What is in a name . . . when it is the name of Jesus, everything that we need in this life and the life to come! “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12.

It is imperative that whatever it is that we desire to be called, in the final analysis the only name that really matters is to be a child of the One true and living God…the Saviour of the world-Jesus Christ!

When He returns, will your name be found written in the Lamb’s book of life- He promises that all of His beloved children will have a new name over in glory! “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.”

Blessings, and glory be to God!
