The Presence, Power and Penalty of Sin
“For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.” Romans 5:19.
Sin is any violation of God’s laws, whether it is by omission, defined as those things that we should do, but chose for some reason not to do, or the sin of commission the things that we should not do. . . sin separates us from God. Romans 3:23 states “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
The fact is we inherited our sinful nature from our first parents Adam and Eve. The enemy of our souls is the father of all lies, and he desires to blind us in believing we are “okay” when we walk outside of God’s will. He lied and deceived Eve and is still trying to deceive God’s beloved children today. We must acknowledge that we are all born with (AIDS) An Acquired Immune Deficency called Sin. The desire to sin is with us through our carnal existence as long as we live in this world. “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in.” 1 John 1:8.
So, some may see this as a dismal perspective on life..but my friends, JESUS is the answer for life more abundantly. Our belief and acceptance of Jesus Christ our Lord, provides our salvation now and forever… we are once saved, always saved. “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.” Romans 5:19.
To understand the doctrine of Once Saved Always Saved– we must address the presence, power, and penalty of sin. We are saved from the penalty of sin, which is spiritual death and total separation from God. We fight against the presence of sin and its influence or temptation everyday of our lives. Satan and his demonic forces seek to disrupt our peace and destroy our testimony before God; he cunningly sneaks in doubts to make us second guess God and His ability to provide all that we need-especially our salvation! We do not have to lie, cheat or succumb to any other sinful deterrent to acquire what God already has prepared for us since the foundation of the world…no one can take away! “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” John 10:28.
And then there is the power of sin which is physical death. It is truth that death comes to all men- the Bible vailidates that by one man- Adam sin entered the world and the result is physcial death. Recall these words of God to Adam after the fall: “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” Genesis 3:19. But note this is the first death!
It’s unfortunate that Satan deceptive lies blind so many to think that when you’re dead your done… but the Bible clearly speaks of the “second death” or eternal damnation in several passages, primarily in the book of Revelation. The scripture refers to the eternal fate of the unsaved in the lake of fire, distinct from the first physical death. Revelation 20:14-15- clearly defines the second death as being cast into the lake of fire, a final an irreversible judgment of the soul for those whose names which are not written in the Book of Life. “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”
So, even though we have accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and our eternal destination is secure… how do we deal with this unshakable presence of sin we’ve inhertited, I’m so glad you asked…every born-again believer has become a new creature in Christ, we are endowed by the power of God with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, He guides and instructs us in the truth of God; He warns and provides correction from any known sin that creeps up in our lives. But has also given us free will- therefore we must choose to stay attuned to His voice, pray without ceasing, read and meditate on His word; and we must apply what we have learned by following in obedience. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” 2 Timothy 3:16.
But, if by chance we fall to a known sin, we can thank God for His faithfulness towards us that has cancelled sins power and penalty to enslave us indefinitely… if we acknowledge and truly repent of our sins, He will lovingly forgive us. 1 John 1:9 states “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Sin is always lurking around to take us out…but consider these encouraging words of deliverance: “But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.” Romans 7:23-25.
To God be the glory… we have the victory in Jesus and are cleansed by His precious blood now and forever (Once Saved Always Saved!). . . He is faithful, just and nothing and no one can ever separate us from His love! “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39.
God’s peace, love and grace be with us all!
