“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.” John 4:23

The current pandemic has rendered millions of born-again believers the inability to go into places of worship. John chapter 4 gives the account of Jesus meeting with the woman of Samaria at the well. Her error in discussing worship with Jesus was her fixation on the place of where her forefathers had dedicated to the worship of God. She left the well that day with a spiritual understanding from the Messiah that worship is not constricted to the physical place, but in the spirit and soul given by God. “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.” John 4:23

The Word tells us “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” John 4:24. God is spiritual and eternal; our flesh or this physical body will not inherit eternal life, but our souls will live forever, so we must be indwelt by the Holy Spirit which is the only link between human nature and the divine spirit of God. “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” 1Corinthians 6:19. All true approach to God must therefore be in spirit.

Worship which is “in truth” is in harmony with the nature of God whom we worship. When we think of God in hearing His truth- the Word, the hymns of praise and prayers that we lift because of who He is, it brings reverence and adoration from deep down in our souls. Only then can we experience His amazing grace and unconditional love and cry abba, Father…our giver and sustainer of life.

When we learn to think of God as our Father, true worship begins; a father sees his child no matter what condition he/she is in and runs to meet them with love; God is a spirit and is love. We worship, honor, and adore Him in the spirit; yes, it is good and pleasant for men to fellowship in the spirit…but without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit there is no true worship without.

Let us pray for the filling of the Holy Spirit that we may worship, meditate, pray, and offer up our praise to our heavenly Father. There is a gospel hymn that goes…sending up my timber every day. The meaning is a building being made not by mortal hands, but by the spirit of God.

We must earnestly seek to stay focused in the Spirit and know that even if we cannot attend and worship in the sanctuary; we have a heavenly sanctuary that is nearer than the very air that we breathe. It is imperative that we take the time to shutout the cares of this world; pray, meditate, and connect with the Holy Spirit to be true worshippers.
