Our Daily Bread
“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.;” Matthew 6:34.
Everything that we need is lovingly provided by God. The scripture teaches us that “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” Even though God knows exactly what we need, there is a lesson in coming before His throne of grace to ask for what we need; it helps us to put all things in perspective, putting our focus and dependence on God; in prayer we are humbled and reminded that He is our omnipotent and Almighty God…the giver and sustainer of life.
The Lords’ Prayer located in the book of Matthew; gives us six different petitions that we are to bring before God. The first three places our focus on God alone and His sovereignty; it speaks of His glory, kingdom, and divine will. The last three speaks of those things that we need in the way of guidance, protection, and sustenance. Therefore, we are admonished to come boldly before the throne of grace and ask for all that we need. “Give us this day our daily bread.” Matthew 6:11.
Why do you think that we are not admonished to ask for the entire week’s supply of bread? The answer is quite simple, but paramount to our very existence… so that we will trust in the faithfulness of God to provide for us every single day. This reminds me of the Israelites when God rained down manna from heaven for them to eat. Exodus 16:12 “I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.” Exodus 16:12.
They were given specific directions on how much to take and consume. When they followed God directions each man had exactly what was needed proportionately for him and his family; they were instructed to take only what was needed for the day. Out of disobedience some tried to store up more than a days’ portion and the worms ate it up by morning. “Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.” Exodus 16:20. God’s plan is always best; He desires that we follow His divine will and watch how He provides for all that we need!
Are you depending on God to ensure that you have all that you need? I can attest that God is faithful; He has always and will continue to provide for His beloved children; we can rest in His unconditional love. Psalm 34:10 state “The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.” Just as the Israelites, we are to obediently seek and follow after His divine will. He will take care of us from now throughout eternity.
So, today let us run to the foot of the cross, laying our petitions before God for this day… remember that He hears the cries of His children, and He is faithful to provide for us not only today, but every tomorrow. “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” Matthew 6:34.
May God’s blessings of unconditional love be showered on us all!
