Watch Your Mouth!

“Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.” James 3:10.

There were many occasions as a child that I have heard these words, “watch your mouth!” they were always followed with a very stern look from my mom or dad; something that had been said was certainly out of line and unacceptable.

The tongue is such a small member of the body but can cause monumental destruction. The bible warns us of how dangerous the tongue can really be. “The tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.” Psalm 52:2. The word choice of a razor denotes a sharp and smooth execution; it is synonymous to someone purposely using the tongue to damage the reputation and character of another.

James chapter 3 teaches us about learning to bridle our tongue. “Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.” James 3:10. As new creatures in Christ, this sort of thing should not be a part of our character. While the tongue is a powerful little member, it can be used for much good, as well as bad; we make the choice of what and how we relay our thoughts and feelings at any given time.

Our conversation with and about others should be seasoned with grace; speaking words that are uplifting, encouraging, and helpful. We should always follow the scripture as it admonishes us “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:” James 1:19. We must always stop and consider how the messages we convey affects the hearer…. will it harm or bring peace… is it positive or negative; what is the purpose- regardless of the intent, it should come from a pure heart of love and concern for the receiver.

Let us learn to pray and think before we speak, asking ourselves before sharing or discussing a matter- is it kind, necessary, or true, and then allow the Holy Spirit to guide us in the best way to approach every conversation; in doing so a lot of strife and division will be alleviated in relationships with others.

May we faithfully start this day in prayer and meditation; seeking to be filled with the Holy Spirit and asking the Lord to guide the words of our mouths, praying earnestly to speak words of healing, peace, and love to all those we will encounter along our way; but most important that we may be found pleasing in the sight of our Savior. “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.” Psalms 19:14.

God blessings of mercy and peace be with us all.
