Not Unto Us, O Lord

“Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth’s sake.” Psalm 115:1.

To God be the Glory or the acronym (TGBTG) is a popular phrase meaning to God be the lhe glory. It is the expression of the the heart that all the glory for anything that is done belongs to God. Unfortunately, it is becoming a “catch” phrase, in other words it is what is right and in order to say; it just comes natural when praising God; and yet way down deep in the soul it just may be circumspect if giving God all the glory and not wanting some small piece for self is the case.

My friends, to thine ownself we must be true-this takes some really deep soul searching – and serious prayer in order for the light to be shone on any tiny little things that could just be seeking glory when we’re not even conscious or aware of the offense!

Therefore we must never cease to pray these words from the Lord “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24.

The Psalmist wrote these words: “Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth’s sake.” Psalm 115:1. It emphasizes that God’s glory, not human accomplishments, should be praised at all times- it not about us…but all about Him!

Notice that the Psalmist uses what we call a palilogia– a rhetorical or simple repetition of a word of phrase…the writer is making a point –“get this…this is important…key in on this- and he repeats three essential words for us to always keep at the forefront of our minds-Not unto us! To God belongs all the glory for and in all things! “”Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31.

As Born-again believers we must strive to glorify God in ever aspects of our lives, not just religious activities, but also in our daily mundane routines like eating and drinking; everything we have in physical health or skills, mental or intellectual abilities, financial gain, spiritual enlightenment and even that charisma you may have – right down to the very air that we breathe, it all comes from God-and to Him BELONGS all the glory.

So, for those of us who truly love the Lord…how do we miss the mark at times? Those little things that creep into the thoughts and mind when you worked extremely hard-given your all to family, friends, a project and it appears that no one noticed-it is just not appreciated at home, work, especially Church work ya’llor you finally reached a goal that has taken insumountable courage or strength and preserverence…that old selfish nature can rear it’s little head and seek some of the glory for what “I’ve” done.

Be on guard, because this my friends is a ploy of the enemy who is sly and cunning and slips thoughts in the mind like a landmine on the battlefield-you can’t even see it laying in your pathway-we must never forget that all that we do is just our reasonable service- in response to God’s unfailing love and mercy! “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” He alone gets the glory!

Finally, May God help us to remember that we were created for His good pleasure for He is before all things and by Him all things consist- so the glory is definitely not unto us- but unto Him“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” Revelation 4:11.

Truly to God be the glory… may His  blessings of peace, strength, unfailing love and grace be with us now and forever!
