“And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.”  2 Samuel 9:3.

It is insignificant as to how much bible we know if we do not know much about the grace of God. King David’s kindness to his sworn friend Jonathan’s disabled son Mephibosheth, teaches us of God’s amazing grace towards us.

In the book of I Samuel we find that Jonathan and David made a covenant. 1 Samuel 20:15 states: “But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.”

The bible tells us that when Jonathan and King Saul were killed in Jezreel; that the nurse of Mephibosheth, took him and ran; and in the midst of their escape he fell and became lame. Therefore, he was raised in a placed called Lodebar; this was a barren land with no pasture, fruitless and out right despicable. The child was born of royal descent but raised as an indigent.

In chapter eight during the transition from Saul’s rule to David’s reign as King, David enjoys a season of prosperity. Seasons of adversity or prosperity will readily show the character or heart of a person. David was not in lack of anything at the time and was looking for a way to give back some of God’s blessings poured out to him on others; it is then that he recalls the promise that he made with Jonathan and was determined to keep it; therefore, he inquires if there are any left in the house of Saul.

A servant from the house of Saul was found and sent to David. He replied to David in chapter 9:3: “And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.” Notice how the servant, did not call him by name, but pointed out the obvious and negative…he was lame on his feet, as if to say, he is really not worth your time. This is what the enemy does in our lives; points out our weaknesses- in hopes to make us feel inferior and unwanted; but we are  priceless treasures of our Father in Heaven!

King David sent for Mephibosheth to be brought up out of Lodebar. 2 Samuel 9:7 states “And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.” David’s kindness removed all Mephibosheth’s fears, and he was treated as one of David’s on sons, he would sit at the Kings table forever!

This is an amazing analogy of what Jesus does for us…we were all exiled in a barren land like unto Lodebar called sin; but by God’s amazing grace, He seeks us, welcomes us, and lifts us out of our fallen state. Yes, Mephibosheth was lame on his feet; but all his weaknesses were hidden under the King’s table; this is what happens when we become saved…God’s grace has us covered and gives us undeserved riches! Ephesians 1:3 states: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:”

My friends, we do not have to remain in the barren places in our lives…whatever your lameness or Lodebar may be today (i.e. fear, depression, feelings of inferiority, indecisiveness, physical inabilities or loneliness of heart to name only a few obstacles we may encounter along this journey of life= but do not let the lies of the enemy keep you down; come on up out of Lodebar; you are a child of the most High God who will provide all that you need; and best of all, you also get to sit at the King of Kings table forever!
