Making New Year’s Resolutions

“Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the Lord’s thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.” Deuteronomy 10:14

Have you made a New Year’s Resolution? It probably goes something like; this is the year, I will… we often make plans for ourselves, our children, grandchildren, spouse, and others to do or have things in the future. Goals, objectives and positive thoughts for our hopes and dreams are healthy; but the truth is we own nothing, not even ourselves…Deuteronomy 10:14 state “Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the Lord’s thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.” Deuteronomy 10:14

We most often suffer grave consequences, much heartache, and disappointments when we resolve to do what pleases our own thoughts and plans…the problem arises when we fail to consult God for His will in our lives or the lives of our loved ones. Only God knows the future. The bible teaches us the parable of a certain rich man whose fields brought in a great yield… “And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?” Luke 12:18-20

Our first resolve should be to seek a closer walk with the Lord, seeking Him teaches us to reverence, honor and give Him the glory in and through all things. We learn to consult Him for His direction and wisdom for every decision that we make. Psalm 119:133 state “Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.”

The Apostle James reminds us to put God first “Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.” James 4:15.

God has divine providence over all; Let us learn to say if it is the Lord’s I will go here or do this. When our steps are ordered by the Lord, we experience His goodness and mercy all the days of our lives…so, as your thoughts consider what you will do this year, remember that God holds the ultimate plans to whatever you are seeking; and praise God when we place Him first, we can proclaim in confidence just as King David did in Psalm 23:6 “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.’

So, my friends, let us trust our unknown future with our Great and Almighty God; He will direct our paths in righteousness; and when we delight in Him the Word teaches us that He will even give us the desires of our hearts! “Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. God help us all to simply let go and let Him lead the way!” Psalm 34:7.

God’s blessings, peace and unspeakable joy be with us all!
